Seasonal Thoughts

 In Traditional Chinese Medicine we celebrate changing of the seasons. We believe in the natural order of things and know that as humans, we are a part of nature and not separate from it. 

According to the five element cycle, which corresponds to the seasonal changes, Fall is associated with the element Metal. 

The color associated with Fall (metal) is white. All elements correspond to organ systems and the lung and large intestine are the "metal" organs. The flavor is pungent (spicy). The negative emotion associated with the element metal is grief and sadness and the positive emotion is letting go of the past and moving forward.

Certain foods mildly tonify the metal element. Some of them are pears (good for lubricating a dry cough or for constipation caused by dryness), lily bulbs (can be put into soup), and moderately spicy foods.

 The other issue people frequently have with the metal element or lungs is blockage from phlegm. Acupuncture, herbal medicine and foods can help eliminate phlegm. Avoid dairy products (especially non-organic), sweets, breads and wheat flour and add foods that eliminate phlegm, such as radishes and RAW almonds.  

 The metal element is crucial to a strong immune system. Many acupuncture points and many herbal remedies are available to help strengthen the lungs and large intestine. One herb that is easy to find is "astragalus" or what we call "huang qi". This root can be added to soups or boiled and made into a tea.
